Industrial heat accounts for roughly 1,600 TWh a year in the European Union, or 16% of final energy demand, and 75% of it is still produced by burning fossil fuels. Epyr turns cheap electricity hours into steam. Its units store electricity as heat in firebricks and release it when the process needs it. They are delivered as Heat-as-a-Service, with financing where needed, so industrial sites don't have to take on upfront capex and added complexity. The ambition is to make electric heat cheaper than gas and to lead the electrification of industrial steam across Europe.
We invested in Epyr because it makes decarbonisation and competitiveness work together. Its first unit at WEPA’s Troyes mill was built in under six months and now covers up to a quarter of the site’s steam needs. Papeco has since selected Epyr for a 35 MWh unit that will replace all of its natural gas. Léa Dardenne, a former BCG partner specialised in energy, and Bastien Oggeri, co-founder of Innovafeed, combine deep energy expertise with proven experience building an industrial company. We led Epyr’s €15M Series A and partner with the team to deliver its next wave of projects across European industry.

"Slate had everything we were looking for: investors with an entrepreneurial mindset, who understand what we do, share our vision and know the ecosystem, and who, on top of that, are a real pleasure to work with."

Lea Dardenne, co-founder and co-CEO Epyr
